Scientist Manually Open the Rare Corpse Flower

The rare rainforest plant which was a major attraction in Chicago for the last several weeks didn’t bloom the whole time. The flower was in Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe was attraction of visitors as they waited for it to bloom and spread its powerfully pungent odor, but it was not to be. Still, hundreds of visitors made a beeline on Sunday to see the plant, technically named titan arum and commonly referred to as “Spike.”

For more than a week, signs stating about the impending burst and a faint odor were displayed. But the plant failed to bloom. Therefore, after waiting for more than a week, the botanic garden scientists decided to cut around the base of the plant and open Spike on their own. That time, the curious crowd got to see the inside of the plant, which is 68 inches tall.

According to the scientists, Spike didn’t have enough energy to open itself.

When the scientists’ cut the main base, the outer layers of the plant peeled out. Inside of the plant were spongy and rubbery leaves.

Chicago Botanic Garden conservation scientist Patrick Herendeen said, “It’s disappointing that it didn’t open because it’s really quite splendid. They’re amazing plants. Their flowers are amazing and their odor is amazing. However, this is not unprecedented. It just didn’t perform as expected. But that’s just like our garden plants at home.”
